Total Marks: 17(Subjective Type)Time: 33 Minutes
2.
Write short answers to any six (6) questions.
[6 × 2 = 12]
(i)
Write the examples of Plastics.
Ans: Polythene, polypropylene, PVC (polyvinyl chloride), polystyrene, Teflon and Bakelite.
(ii)
Write the properties of plastics
Ans: Plastics are light in weight, flexible, strong and durable. They resist water, chemicals and corrosion, are poor conductors of heat and electricity, are easily moulded into different shapes, and are cheap.
(iii)
How 3D layer of Polymer are formed?
Ans: When polymer chains are joined to each other by strong covalent cross-links in all directions, a rigid three-dimensional (3D) network is formed, as in Bakelite. Polymers can also be printed layer by layer in 3D printing.
(iv)
What is Synthetic fibers? Give example.
Ans: Synthetic fibres are man-made fibres produced from polymers made from petroleum chemicals. Examples: nylon, polyester and acrylic.
(v)
Write the properties of Synthetic fiber.
Ans: They are strong, durable and elastic, resist wrinkles, moulds and insects, dry quickly and are cheaper than most natural fibres.
(vi)
Which natural fiber does acrylic resemble and why?
Ans: Acrylic resembles wool, because it is soft, warm and light in weight, so it is used as a substitute for wool.
(vii)
Why do plastics cause environmental problems?
Ans: Plastics are non-biodegradable and can take about 1000 years to decompose. They collect on land, in rivers and in seas, and harm animals and plants.
(viii)
Why is Burning Plastic dangerous?
Ans: Burning plastic releases poisonous gases such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen chloride (from PVC) and dioxins. These pollute the air and cause breathing problems and other diseases.
(ix)
Are natural polymers hazardous for the environment? Explain why?
Ans: No. Natural polymers such as cellulose, starch, wool and proteins are biodegradable. Bacteria and fungi break them down, so they do not collect in the environment.
Note: Attempt any one question.[5 × 1 = 5]
3.
Write a note on plastics?
Ans: Plastics are synthetic polymers that can be moulded into different shapes by heat and pressure. They are of two types: thermoplastics (soften on heating, e.g. polythene) and thermosetting plastics (do not soften again, e.g. Bakelite).
They are light, flexible, strong, cheap and resistant to water and chemicals, so they are used in packaging, pipes, toys, electrical goods and furniture. However, they are non-biodegradable and cause pollution.
4.
Describe the effects of synthetic polymers on the environment.
Ans: Synthetic polymers are non-biodegradable and stay in the environment for hundreds of years. Plastic waste pollutes land, rivers and seas, blocks drains, and is swallowed by animals and fish. It breaks into tiny microplastics that enter the food chain.
Burning plastic releases toxic gases that pollute the air and harm health.
The effects can be reduced by reducing, reusing and recycling plastic and by using biodegradable materials.
